3 Common Air Conditioner Issues

3 Reasons Your Air Conditioner Is Not Cooling Your House and What To Do About It

Your Air Conditioner is Running But Your House is Not Cool

Living in Florida is great for getting some Vitamin D and staying warm because it never truly gets cold in Florida. If you’re a Florida resident, then you know exactly how warm the weather gets and how important it is having an air conditioner. A working AC is not an option, it’s a necessity. Of course just having an AC isn’t good enough. Your AC needs to be functional and running properly, especially during the hottest seasons (summer and fall). Having an AC unit that cools your house during the hottest of times is a must. Naturally, you may run into issues with your air conditioner and have problems or questions like:

  • Why is my air conditioner not working?
  • The AC is not blowing cold air. Why is the air conditioner not cooling?
  • My air conditioner won’t stop running. Why won’t it stop?

Reasons why your air conditioner is running but your house is not cool can be: clogged air conditioner vents, thermostat is defective, or internal issues that need professional help. No matter the issue, big or small, here is a list of ways to help you figure out what to do about your AC not cooling your house.

Check your AC Air Vents

First thing’s first, when your AC feels like it isn’t as cool as usual, check the air conditioner vents. Checking your AC vents can be as simple as putting your hand to the outside of the vent and feeling for circulating cold air. You’ll be able to tell if air is actually coming out. When there is no air coming out of the vents in the house that is a clear sign there is blockage happening. When you discover that you have clogged air conditioner vents, here’s how to fix it:

  1. Unscrew the metal on the outside of the ac vent to remove the metal casing
  2. Check the filler. Dirty air filters will block the passageway for the air to move through and cause a lack of circulation.
  3. Like getting an oil change, filters need to be changed often. Forgetting to change the filter, leads to a clogged filter and overworks the blower to pull the right amount of air across the coil. Overtime, this causes your air conditioner to run less efficiently and eventually wear out.

Replace a Dirty Air Filter

So, what do you do about a dirty filter? Simple. Swap it out for a new one. You can do this by running to a local supermarket or home improvement store to buy a new filter. Before buying a replacement filter, make sure to identify the right size of your filter by measuring the filter. You can also see if the dimensions are printed on the side of your existing air filter. Snap a photo of it with your phone. Once you have found the appropriate filter for your ac vent, remove the old filter with your hands and pop in the new filter for better airflow.

Check the Temperature

Another issue you could be experiencing is that the air vents are blowing air but it’s not cold air. So, you find the AC in your house is working but not blowing cold air and the ac won’t cool below 80, what do you do? Our first recommendation is to check the air conditioning unit itself. A clear indicator that your AC is low on refrigerant (freon) is a higher than normal electric bill. Here are a few signs to tell if your outside AC unit is low on freon or there’s a refrigerant leakage:

  • Ice on refrigerant lines
  • Frozen evaporator coil
  • Hissing or whistling noise coming from refrigerant lines
  • Water leaking around the heater

If you notice any of these signs, have a professional locate and repair the leakage. Once the refrigerant levels are back to normal, your air conditioner will be blowing cold air like nothing happened.

Check the Thermostat

Most thermostats work great for a long time. A thermostat is one of those things that you don’t pay much attention to until it stops working. If your thermostat is not working, it will need to be replaced. However, sometimes there is a simple fix. Here are a few reasons why your thermostat may not be running properly:

  • Positioning in the house - The thermostat is in the wrong place (i.e. it is in direct sunlight or more than 5 feet from the door)
  • The thermostat is old or needs batteries - Like most things in life, thermostats won’t last forever. After 10 years, it’s probably time to upgrade the thermostat. Also, if you are seeing a “low battery” or low power warning from your thermostat, it’s time to change the batteries.
  • Improper Installation - A great sign if the thermostat is not level or improperly installed is if there are loose wires. If the thermostat appears to be loose and unsturdy, do not by any means pull the thermostat out. This will cause significant damage and even electrical issues in your house. Call a professional to get it repaired.
  • Program Defects - If you are experiencing problems with your thermostat without explanation, the thermostat settings are wrong or defective. The only solution to a defective thermostat is to have it replaced.

Check with an Air Conditioner Repair Service

Sometimes there are more underlying issues with your ac system than meets the eye. You’ve checked the ac vents, the heater, the thermostat, and you can’t figure it out. Or maybe you checked and noticed some of these issues: low on refrigerant, a clogged/leaking condenser, or an internal programming issue. Our best advice… call a professional. These are things that should be fixed immediately with care and expertise. The best thing to do is to reach out to your local AC repair service to do a maintenance check. Another option could be to consider an annual maintenance program that ensures your air conditioner will be long-lasting. Making sure your AC is serviced properly is important for its durability and longevity. A typical maintenance plan implemented by professionals can keep your air conditioner in tip top shape. A standard maintenance plan for your AC unit looks something like: Every 3 months the filters to the ac vents will be changed, every 6 months they will clean out the evaporator drain, annually they will both inspect and clean the condensing coils and refrigerant lines. The decision to invest in an annual maintenance plan is a smart one that will save you time and money down the line.
